Settle in the UK with Indefinite Leave to Remain

After years of building your life in the UK, settlement can give you greater freedom to plan your future. Indefinite Leave to Remain, often called ILR or UK settlement, allows you to live, work and study here without a time limit on your stay.

Reaching this stage requires more than completing a particular number of years. Your immigration route, residence history and circumstances all matter.

Knightsbridge Immigration helps you understand when you qualify, what you need to demonstrate and how to prepare your settlement application.

Understand your route to settlement

There are several routes to Indefinite Leave to Remain, each with its own requirements.

A Skilled Worker Visa can lead to settlement after five years of qualifying permission. Applicants on the five-year partner route may qualify through their Spouse Visa, while other family routes have different qualifying periods. Some work routes allow earlier settlement, and long residence may provide an alternative after ten years of qualifying lawful residence.

We review your immigration history to identify the relevant route and explain which periods of permission can count towards your application.

Check your residence and time abroad

Your eligibility can depend on when your qualifying residence began, the visas you have held and time spent outside the UK.

Different settlement routes apply different residence and absence rules. A calculation that works for one applicant may not apply to another, particularly where there have been changes of immigration category.

We review your travel history and previous grants of permission, identify any gaps in the information and explain whether further evidence is needed before you proceed.

Prepare the evidence your application needs

The documents required depend on how you qualify for settlement.

A Skilled Worker applicant may need confirmation of their salary and continued employment from their sponsor. A partner application may require evidence of the relationship, living together and meeting the applicable financial requirement.

We also check the English language and Life in the UK requirements, including whether an exemption or previously accepted evidence applies.

Our support can include an eligibility assessment, a document checklist tailored to your circumstances, evidence review and application preparation. This gives you a clearer understanding of what is needed and helps identify inconsistencies before submission.

Choose the right application date

Your visa expiry date and your settlement eligibility date are not necessarily the same.

Applying too early can lead to refusal. Waiting until your permission is about to expire can leave insufficient time to obtain documents or complete any required tests.

We help you establish the appropriate application date. If you do not yet qualify for settlement, we can explain whether Further Leave to Remain is needed to maintain your permission while you work towards eligibility.

Plan for your family’s position

Your partner and children do not automatically receive settlement when you do. Each person’s eligibility needs to be checked, and family members may reach this stage at different times.

We help you understand who can apply alongside you and whether anyone needs to extend their existing permission first. This allows you to plan the applications, timing and costs together.

Look ahead after settlement

ILR is different from British Citizenship. Citizenship requires a separate application and has its own residence and eligibility requirements.

Settlement can also be lost following a sufficiently long absence from the UK. Understanding these distinctions helps you plan overseas travel, future relocation or a later citizenship application.

Discuss your settlement application

Tell us which visa you hold, when your permission expires and how long you have lived in the UK.

We will confirm whether we can assist and explain the proposed work and fees before you instruct us.
