Start your career as an immigration adviser
One of the hardest parts of becoming an immigration adviser is knowing how to get started.
You can study immigration law. You can complete professional training. You can read the Immigration Rules and follow Home Office guidance. But there comes a point where theory has to meet practice.
The Immigration Advice Authority expects aspiring advisers to demonstrate appropriate competence, training and relevant experience. For many people, that creates an obvious difficulty: how do you gain meaningful immigration experience when many busy practices do not have the capacity, resources or time to train somebody from the beginning?
That is the gap our Early Careers pathway is designed to help address.
Learn by being involved in real immigration work
Our aim is not to give somebody a reading list and tell them to come back once they are qualified.
We want developing immigration professionals to understand how cases actually move from an initial enquiry through assessment, evidence, preparation, review and submission.
Practical case experience
Under appropriate supervision and within the limits of what you are permitted to do, you can develop your understanding of real immigration casework.
That may include seeing how information is gathered from a client, how immigration history is analysed, how documents are reviewed, how evidence gaps are identified and how a case is prepared before submission.
The purpose is to understand the thinking behind the work, not simply the administrative steps.
Training and personal development
Practical experience becomes much more valuable when it is supported by structured learning.
We want people developing with Knightsbridge to have time and resources for personal development, keep their immigration knowledge current and work towards the competence expected by the IAA.
We will encourage you to study the relevant syllabus, develop your understanding of the Immigration Rules and Home Office guidance and prepare properly for the IAA assessment process.
We can help you identify where your knowledge is developing well and where more work is needed. The aim is to build competence properly, not rush towards an assessment before you are ready.
Learn, contribute and grow
We are particularly interested in people who want to build a career rather than simply obtain a qualification.
As you develop, we want you to become increasingly useful to the practice. That includes learning how to communicate professionally, manage work carefully, recognise when something needs escalating and understand the standards expected in a regulated immigration environment.
As your knowledge and capability grow, there may also be opportunities to take on greater responsibility and paid work where suitable opportunities are available.
We want development and contribution to grow together.
Who is this for?
This pathway may suit you if you are serious about becoming an immigration adviser but are struggling to bridge the gap between studying immigration law and gaining practical experience.
You may already have completed immigration training. You may come from another legal, advice or professional-services background. Or you may still be working out the best way into the profession.
What matters most is your attitude.
We are looking for people who are reliable, willing to learn, comfortable receiving feedback and prepared to put consistent effort into their development.
Immigration work requires judgement, confidentiality, attention to detail and professional responsibility. Becoming a good adviser is about considerably more than passing an assessment.
What Knightsbridge can help you build
We can provide suitable people with an environment in which to learn, gain practical exposure and develop professionally.
We cannot guarantee IAA registration or that somebody will pass a competence assessment. Those decisions sit with the regulator and depend on the individual meeting the relevant requirements.
What we can do is take your development seriously and help you build stronger practical foundations.
