About this route

This route allows eligible spouses and civil partners to live together in the UK where one partner is British, Irish, settled or holds another qualifying status.

On the standard five-year partner route, you may qualify for settlement after five years, subject to meeting the requirements.

Unmarried partner and fiancé applications have different relationship requirements. We establish the appropriate category before advising.

Eligibility Check

The main questions are:

  • Are you both at least 18?
  • Does your partner hold a qualifying nationality or UK immigration status?
  • Is your marriage or civil partnership recognised in the UK, and is your relationship genuine and continuing?
  • Have you met in person and do you intend to live together permanently in the UK?
  • Can you meet the applicable financial and accommodation requirements?
  • Can you satisfy the English language requirement or an applicable exemption?

These are starting points for assessment, rather than a complete eligibility checklist.

The usual minimum income requirement is £29,000 a year. Different rules may apply to certain existing visa holders or where the sponsor receives specified benefits. Which income or savings can count depends on your circumstances.

Understanding your situation

Perhaps you are living in different countries, recently married, changing employment or approaching an extension deadline.

We examine your relationship history, current permission, income sources, accommodation and any children applying with you. We establish which requirements and evidence periods apply to your application and explain the records you need.

How Knightsbridge Helps

For an agreed application service, we assess the relevant requirements and provide a tailored document request.

We review the relationship, financial, accommodation and language evidence, identify gaps and explain what needs resolving. We prepare the application and supporting explanation, then review the information with you before submission.

We guide you through identity and evidence requirements and handle the submission and follow-up included in your agreed service.

Addressing Challenges

A change of employer, variable pay, self-employment or reliance on savings can affect the financial evidence required. We check the applicable category, calculation and records before preparing the application.

Periods living apart also need context. We help you select evidence of your continuing relationship and explain the circumstances.

For UK applications, we check whether your current permission allows switching and plan around its expiry date.

Timescales and Costs

Preparation depends on the evidence available, outstanding records and any issues requiring assessment. We explain the preparation timetable before work begins.

Standard decisions usually take 12 weeks overseas, or eight weeks in the UK where the financial and English requirements are met. Other circumstances can take longer. Faster processing may be available for an additional charge.

Typical government charges per adult applicant are:

ApplicationVisa feeImmigration Health Surcharge
Overseas, usual 33-month grant£2,064£3,105
UK switch or extension, usual 30-month grant£1,407£2,587.50

Children and other dependants have separate charges.

We confirm our professional fee, agreed scope and any applicable VAT in writing. Translation, language testing and any required TB test costs are separate.

Situations requiring closer analysis

Previous refusals, uncertain immigration status, disputed relationship evidence or an application relying on exceptions may require further assessment.

Tell us about these matters at the outset. We first establish whether we can assist and what work is appropriate before agreeing representation.
