A temporary religious placement in the UK needs immigration permission that reflects the work you will actually undertake.
Knightsbridge helps applicants and their sponsoring organisations understand the Religious Worker route and prepare straightforward applications with clear, consistent evidence.
About this route
The Religious Worker visa is a temporary sponsored route for eligible religious work, including work within a religious order and non-pastoral roles supporting a religious organisation.
It allows a stay of up to 24 months, subject to the sponsorship period and the rules. Eligible partners and children can apply as dependants. The route does not itself lead to settlement.
Where the core duties involve leading a congregation, conducting rites and preaching, the Minister of Religion route should be considered instead. The distinction depends on the role’s substance.
Eligibility Check
Before preparing the application, we consider:
- Are you aged 18 or over?
- Have you been offered qualifying temporary religious work?
- Does the organisation hold the appropriate sponsor licence?
- Will it assign a valid Certificate of Sponsorship?
- Can you meet the maintenance requirement or an applicable exemption?
- Have you held Religious Worker or Charity Worker permission during the previous 12 months?
Recent permission on either route can restrict eligibility for a new overseas application, subject to the rules concerning time spent outside the UK.
Understanding your situation
You may be joining a religious order, supporting a temporary programme or taking up an appointment within an established faith organisation.
We look at the duties, duration and support arrangements together. Accommodation, allowances and other practical arrangements should be understood alongside the sponsorship information, especially where you will live within the organisation’s community.
How Knightsbridge Helps
For applications within our scope, we can assess eligibility, review sponsorship details, explain the supporting documents and prepare the application for your approval.
We help distinguish the information you must provide from the information your sponsor needs to confirm. If family members will accompany you, we explain their separate requirements and include their preparation in the agreed scope where instructed.
Addressing Challenges
The most important starting point is identifying the correct religious work category. A short appointment does not automatically belong under the temporary route if its duties are those of a minister.
Previous UK stays also need careful checking. Dates on earlier visas and records of travel may be relevant to whether a new overseas application can proceed.
We raise these questions early so the application is built around an accurate account of your position.
Timescales and Costs
The current visa application fee is £340 per person. The Immigration Health Surcharge normally applies, depending on the application.
Standard decisions usually take three weeks outside the UK or eight weeks inside the UK after the required application steps are completed. Further checks can extend those timings.
Where personal funds are required, you normally need £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days, with the final day within 31 days before applying. Qualifying exemptions or sponsor maintenance may apply.
Our professional fee, agreed scope and any applicable VAT are confirmed in writing.
Situations requiring closer analysis
Uncertain duties, disputed sponsorship, previous refusals or immigration breaches may require specialist advice. We explain any referral needed where the work falls outside our scope.
Your journey with Knightsbridge
We begin with the appointment you have been offered and the circumstances of your planned stay. We establish who will sponsor you, what the role involves and whether you have previous UK permission that needs to be considered.
Following the initial enquiry, we agree the service and fees before starting detailed work. You receive a tailored document list, with clear explanations of the information required from you and your sponsoring organisation.
We review the documents against the proposed application and raise any inconsistencies or missing details. This gives you and your sponsor an opportunity to clarify the arrangements before submission.
Once the application is ready, you check the information with us. We explain the remaining identity verification steps and the correspondence covered by our engagement. After the decision, we help you understand the permission granted and the dates relevant to your stay. Any later application is considered and agreed separately.
