UK immigration advice for academics and researchers

A fellowship, research appointment or collaboration can shape the next stage of your career. Taking up that opportunity may depend on coordinating immigration permission with funding dates, institutional requirements and the start of your work.

Knightsbridge Immigration helps academics and researchers assess their options and prepare for the relevant applications. We consider your proposed activity, professional background and host institution, so you can understand the evidence, approvals and timing before making arrangements for your move.

Take up an academic or research appointment

A university or research organisation may offer Skilled Worker sponsorship where the position and applicant meet the requirements. The duties, salary, sponsorship arrangements and your circumstances all need consideration.

We assess the proposed appointment and explain what is needed from you and your employer. This helps establish the preparation required before an application can proceed.

If you already hold UK permission, we also consider whether a new application is needed before taking up the position and how this affects your intended start date.

Assess your options under Global Talent

For eligible academics and researchers, Global Talent offers flexibility to change employers without employer sponsorship. It covers qualifying work in science, medicine, engineering, humanities and social sciences.

An eligible academic appointment, individual fellowship or role on a qualifying funded research project may provide a basis for endorsement. Peer review is another pathway for applicants meeting its criteria. Holders of eligible prizes can apply without endorsement.

We assess which pathway fits your circumstances and identify what your institution, funder or referees need to confirm. Where different routes merit consideration, we explain how their requirements and conditions relate to your plans.

Arrange a research visit or exchange

You may be planning a sabbatical, research collaboration or invitation to lecture or examine students. The appropriate arrangements depend on your activities, duration, funding and relationship with the UK host.

Some academic activities and permitted paid engagements can fall within the Standard Visitor rules. Eligible research exchanges may instead require sponsorship through an approved Government Authorised Exchange scheme.

We examine the proposed arrangements and explain the relevant requirements. Our Visitors & Business Travellers page provides further information about advice for shorter stays.

Coordinate evidence, approvals and timing

An appointment letter, fellowship award and funding confirmation may each establish a different part of your circumstances. We review the relevant documents together, checking the information about your role, funding and dates, and identifying missing or inconsistent details.

Where application preparation is agreed, we explain what we will prepare and which documents or confirmations you need to obtain.

Certain research activities require Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance. Whether this applies depends on your nationality, subject, role and immigration circumstances. We help establish whether it is relevant and when it is needed, so the additional stage can be included in your timetable.

Consider what comes after the current project

A fixed-term appointment may be one stage in a longer academic career. You may intend to move between institutions, undertake fieldwork overseas or remain in the UK with your family.

We consider how the available options relate to future applications, travel and the position of any partner or children.

If your immediate plans concern doctoral study, our Students & Graduates page explains the support relevant to studying in the UK.

Discuss your academic or research plans

You do not need to choose a route before contacting us. We will explain whether we can assist and which assessment or service is appropriate.

Before you proceed, we explain its scope, fees and the information needed from you.
