Moving to the UK for a sporting opportunity involves more than agreeing a contract. Your endorsement, sponsorship and immigration application need to fit together around the role you are taking up.

Knightsbridge helps sportspeople and coaches prepare straightforward International Sportsperson visa applications, with clear guidance on the requirements, supporting documents and steps ahead.

About this route

The International Sportsperson route is for elite sportspeople and qualified coaches who are internationally established and will contribute to their sport at the highest level in the UK. You need an endorsement from the relevant sports governing body and sponsorship from an appropriately licensed employer.

Permission can last for up to three years. Eligible partners and children can apply as dependants, and settlement may become possible after five qualifying years if the relevant conditions are met.

Eligibility Check

These questions help establish what needs to be checked:

  • Have you secured a role with a licensed UK sponsor?
  • Has the relevant sports governing body endorsed you?
  • Does your Certificate of Sponsorship accurately describe your role and employment dates?
  • Can you meet the financial requirement or rely on an applicable exemption?
  • If applying for more than 12 months, can you meet the English language requirement?
  • Will your partner or children be applying with you?

For applications exceeding 12 months, English is normally required at A1 in speaking and listening, unless an exemption applies.

Understanding your situation

You may be joining a club from overseas, moving between UK employers or preparing for a longer appointment after an initial contract. Your circumstances determine which application is needed and when it can be made.

We consider your current immigration position alongside the proposed role. We also discuss family arrangements and relevant dates, so the application plan reflects the move you actually intend to make.

How Knightsbridge Helps

Our work can include checking eligibility, reviewing your endorsement and sponsorship details, identifying supporting evidence, preparing the application and checking it with you before submission.

Where appropriate, and with your permission, we can raise factual document queries with your club or employer. The governing body decides whether to endorse you, while the sponsor remains responsible for assigning accurate sponsorship information.

Addressing Challenges

A signed contract does not resolve every immigration requirement. Differences between the contract, endorsement and sponsorship record should be addressed before the application is submitted.

Financial evidence also needs careful timing. Where personal funds are required, the usual requirement is £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days, with the final day within 31 days before applying. Qualifying residence or properly certified sponsor maintenance may remove the need to show personal savings.

Timescales and Costs

Standard decisions are usually made within three weeks for overseas applications and eight weeks for applications inside the UK, after the required application steps are completed.

The application fee is currently £340 for permission of up to 12 months. For longer permission, it is £819 when applying overseas or £943 inside the UK. The Immigration Health Surcharge may also apply.

Our professional fee, agreed scope and any applicable VAT are confirmed in writing before paid work begins.

Situations requiring closer analysis

Previous refusals, disputed endorsements, immigration breaches or concerns about the proposed employment may require specialist representation. We explain any referral needed before undertaking work outside our scope.

Your journey with Knightsbridge

We begin by understanding the sporting opportunity, your current location and the dates you are working towards. The initial enquiry helps us identify the service you need. Once instructed, we assess the application requirements and agree a practical preparation plan.

You receive a tailored document list explaining what we need from you and what should come from your sponsor. As documents arrive, we check that they tell a consistent story and raise any missing information early.

We then prepare the application and give you an opportunity to check your personal details and the information being submitted. After submission, we explain the identity verification arrangements and handle agreed correspondence within our engagement.

When a decision arrives, we help you understand the permission granted and relevant conditions. Any later employer change, extension or settlement application is discussed and scoped separately.
