Volunteering with a UK charity can offer the opportunity to contribute to work you care about. Before making travel plans, it is important to understand whether the placement qualifies and how you will be supported during your stay.

Knightsbridge helps applicants prepare straightforward Charity Worker visa applications, with clear guidance on sponsorship and supporting evidence.

About this route

The Charity Worker visa is a temporary route for qualifying unpaid voluntary work. The work must directly support the sponsor’s charitable purpose, and the organisation must hold the appropriate sponsor licence.

Permission is limited to a maximum of 12 months. Eligible partners and children can apply as dependants. The route does not itself lead to settlement.

Eligibility Check

The main questions are:

  • Are you aged 18 or over?
  • Have you arranged a qualifying voluntary placement?
  • Will your licensed sponsor assign a Certificate of Sponsorship?
  • Are the duties genuinely unpaid and consistent with the route?
  • Can you meet the financial requirement or an applicable exemption?
  • Have you recently held Charity Worker or Religious Worker permission?

Previous permission on either route can affect eligibility for a new overseas application. The relevant dates and any time spent outside the UK need to be checked.

Understanding your situation

A charity may offer a placement with accommodation, reimburse certain expenses or expect you to fund your own stay. Those arrangements should be clear from the outset.

We consider the placement duties, the support available and your proposed travel dates. If you are bringing family members, we also discuss their applications and the additional financial planning involved.

How Knightsbridge Helps

We can check whether your proposed application fits the route, review sponsorship details, explain the evidence requirements and prepare the application for your approval.

Our work includes checking that the placement description, financial evidence and application answers are consistent. We also explain the documents that may be needed for your identity, travel history and any applicable health screening.

Addressing Challenges

The distinction between volunteering and paid employment is central to this route. The rules permit reasonable expenses and appropriate accommodation within defined limits, but the role must not provide prohibited remuneration or fill a permanent position.

The sponsored work must also contribute directly to the charity’s purpose. Describing a role as voluntary does not, by itself, establish that it qualifies.

We raise unclear duties or support arrangements during preparation so they can be clarified with the sponsor.

Timescales and Costs

The current application fee is £340 per person. The Immigration Health Surcharge may also apply.

Standard decisions usually take three weeks for applications outside the UK and eight weeks inside the UK after the required application steps are completed. These timings do not include gathering documents or arranging sponsorship.

Where personal maintenance funds are required, the usual amount is £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days, with the final day within 31 days before applying. Exemptions may apply.

Our professional fee and any applicable VAT are agreed before paid work begins.

Situations requiring closer analysis

Unclear payment arrangements, previous refusals, immigration breaches or doubts about the sponsored role may require further investigation or specialist referral. We explain the appropriate service before proceeding.

Your journey with Knightsbridge

We start by understanding the charitable work you intend to undertake and the arrangements you have made with the organisation. The initial enquiry helps us identify whether the application is suitable for our service and what preparation remains.

Once instructed, we provide a document list tailored to the placement and your circumstances. We explain which information should come from the charity and which evidence you need to provide yourself.

As we review the documents, we check that the duties, dates and financial arrangements are consistent. If something is unclear, we raise it before the application is finalised.

You then review the application with us before submission. We explain the identity verification process and deal with correspondence covered by our engagement. After the decision, we help you understand your permission and the conditions attached to it, including the limits relevant to your voluntary work.
