UK Immigration Fee Waiver Applications

If paying Home Office fees would leave your household unable to meet essential living costs, a fee waiver may help you make an eligible immigration application. The starting point is understanding whether your intended application qualifies and what your financial circumstances show.

At Knightsbridge Immigration, we begin with your circumstances, the application you are considering and any approaching deadline. We explain whether we can assist, what needs assessing and the scope of any proposed work before you decide to proceed.

What is a fee waiver?

A fee waiver allows eligible applicants to proceed without paying specified government charges. Depending on the circumstances, it can cover both the visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge, or the surcharge alone.

A successful request does not grant immigration permission or establish that you meet the requirements of the underlying application. Those questions are considered separately. Any professional fees for advice or preparation are also separate from the government charges being waived.

Who may qualify?

Fee waivers are available for specified applications. These include certain family and private life applications made inside the UK, alongside other qualifying human rights applications.

Eligibility differs between routes. For example, the ordinary in-country policy covers five-year partner applications where specified disability or caring benefits exempt the sponsor from the minimum income threshold. It also covers qualifying parent, private life and ten-year family applications.

Separate arrangements apply to eligible overseas family applications and citizenship registration for children under 18. Settlement applications require particular care because specific exemptions exist, including for destitute bereaved partners.

The correct scheme must be identified before preparing the financial evidence.

How affordability is assessed

For the main family and private life scheme, you do not have to be destitute. The question is whether the funds available to you and relevant household members can cover the charges after essential living costs and children’s needs are met.

Employment does not automatically rule out a waiver. Equally, receiving benefits or having a low bank balance does not automatically establish eligibility. Income, savings, assets, expenditure and financial support need to be considered together.

Where relatives or others support you, the nature and limits of that support may need explaining. For overseas applications, both the applicant’s and sponsor’s finances are assessed, including whether they could reasonably save before travelling.

Preparing the evidence

Evidence should normally cover the six months before the request and explain your current position. Relevant records can include bank statements, payslips, benefit statements, housing costs, household bills and letters confirming support.

The account should address all relevant accounts and explain regular payments and significant transactions. Where documents are unavailable, explain why and provide alternative evidence where possible.

A useful application makes the financial picture understandable. Transfers between accounts, borrowed money or temporary assistance can otherwise give a misleading impression of available funds.

If payment would affect a child’s needs, explain the particular impact and support it with appropriate evidence.

Timing your applications

The fee waiver request and the immigration application are separate stages. For the ordinary online process, the waiver decision comes first.

Following approval inside the UK, GOV.UK specifies ten working days to submit the visa application using the waiver code. Overseas applicants generally have 28 calendar days. Biometrics requirements also apply.

Existing permission and section 3C protection need individual assessment. Submitting a request does not automatically protect every applicant’s status, and a further waiver request should not be assumed to extend protection.

If your permission is approaching expiry, establish the sequence early.

How Knightsbridge helps

We identify the relevant questions before recommending preparation. These may concern route eligibility, household finances, unexplained transactions, missing evidence or the timing of the subsequent application.

Any agreed service will describe the assessment, evidence review and preparation included, together with responsibilities and professional fees. Where specialist advice is required, we explain the appropriate next step.

Request a Free Case Review

Please do not wait until your current immigration permission expires before considering whether a fee waiver is appropriate for you. Seeking advice early gives you time to check eligibility, gather the financial evidence and plan the application sequence. If your permission is approaching expiry, contact us promptly so we can assess your circumstances and explain the next steps.

Tell us which application you are considering, whether you are inside or outside the UK, when your current permission expires and why payment is unaffordable.
