When you budget for British citizenship, are you counting the ceremony twice and the later passport not at all?

Lina’s first family budget counted three naturalisation fees and an extra ceremony charge. The nationality assessment showed three different next processes.

The ordinary adult naturalisation fee currently includes a ceremony element. A first British passport is a separate process and cost. Children’s registration, optional priority processing and particular nationality routes can have different fees and arrangements.

This guide explains how to build a realistic citizenship budget using the fees checked in October 2026. Confirm the current charge for the actual application before payment. The right process should be established first, because paying the correct fee for the wrong nationality application does not resolve eligibility.

Establish the fee for the application actually needed

The current total is £1,839, made up of £1,709 for the application and £130 for the citizenship ceremony. Do not automatically add another £130 to that published total. Optional private ceremony arrangements can have separate local charges.

The same ordinary naturalisation fee applies to the standard category and the category for a person married to a British citizen. Read citizenship after ILR and citizenship through marriage for the different eligibility rules. A shorter residence category does not mean a lower application fee.

If you hold EUSS settlement, citizenship with settled status explains the relevant readiness checks. The earlier EU Settlement Scheme application being free does not create an exemption from the ordinary naturalisation charge. Keep the immigration and nationality costs separate when planning the next stage.

Not every adult nationality application is naturalisation. Registration, particular statutory provisions and special schemes can have different fees or exemptions. A number quoted for Form AN should not be treated as the charge for every way of becoming British.

Likewise, a child may already be British and need evidence or a passport rather than registration. UK-born child citizenship explains the first distinction. Paying a registration fee without checking existing nationality can create an unnecessary application.

For a fictional family, Lina plans adult naturalisation while her UK-born son may have a registration entitlement after her settlement. Their costs belong to separate processes. If a younger sibling was already British at birth, that child’s next process may be a passport instead. A family total should follow those individual conclusions rather than multiply one fee by the number of people at home.

Budget for each person separately

Assume the ordinary eligibility assessments establish these next steps for Lina’s household:

PersonCorrect next process in this exampleCurrent ordinary application budget
LinaAdult naturalisation£1,839, including the £130 standard ceremony element
UK-born older son, not already British, with an established registration entitlementChild registration£1,000, unless an applicable exemption or approved waiver applies
Younger child, established as already British at birthPassport documentationSeparate passport fee for the actual age, location and method; no nationality registration fee assumed

The nationality-application subtotal is £2,839 before any child waiver, optional service or professional fee. It excludes the younger child’s passport and Lina’s later passport. A standard ceremony is not added a second time.

If Lina selects an available £500 adult priority option, that subtotal becomes £3,339. The child’s standard registration does not become priority because Lina purchased speed for herself. Any child waiver must be assessed and approved under its own scheme before it is entered as a saving.

Their sequence still respects each person’s current immigration permission. A nationality application does not extend a temporary visa or settle a child’s status while pending.

Add evidence costs and assess the child’s separate fee position

Some applicants need a new English test or qualification assessment. Others can rely on evidence already accepted for settlement, an eligible degree, specified nationality evidence or an exemption. Read English evidence for British citizenship before paying for another test.

The Life in the UK requirement is separate. An accepted pass can ordinarily be used again, so do not assume a later citizenship application always requires a second booking. Check the evidence and identity history rather than judging the result only by its age.

Read the citizenship documents guide to identify translation or document-retrieval work that may be needed. A budget should distinguish necessary evidence from optional preparation packages or convenience services. A cheaper unapproved test does not save money if it cannot meet the requirement. Establish the accepted evidence method first, then price the actual work required.

The current ordinary child British citizenship registration fee is £1,000. Different provisions or circumstances should be checked before payment. If a child turns 18 during processing, ceremony requirements and the applicable charge need attention.

Read children’s citizenship fee waivers if the household cannot afford the registration fee. The scheme assesses affordability for eligible under-18 applicants. A child being looked after by a local authority can instead have a fee exemption, with the appropriate evidence.

A waiver is not registration approval. The child’s legal basis, evidence, consent and any good character requirement still need assessment. The online process also has its own approval and token deadlines. Do not apply the ten-working-day rule used for an in-country immigration waiver to the child nationality scheme. The fee decision and later registration must be handled under the correct process.

Can adults get a British citizenship fee waiver?

There is no general affordability waiver for an ordinary adult naturalisation application simply because the applicant has a low income or receives benefits. The child citizenship affordability scheme should not be assumed to extend to parents applying at the same time.

Specific nationality routes, exemptions and special schemes can have different fee arrangements. For example, the Windrush Scheme has its own eligibility and process. That does not make it a general alternative fee route for someone who does not meet its conditions.

If the fee is unaffordable, establish the actual application category and whether any particular provision applies. Do not submit a human rights immigration fee waiver request on the assumption that its token can be used for adult citizenship. It is a different scheme and application. Budgeting may require deciding when to apply, while keeping existing immigration status secure and the nationality assessment current.

Separate optional speed from ceremony and passport costs

Eligible online citizenship applications may currently be offered £500 priority, with a usual 30-working-day target from the relevant identity step. The option must be selected through the eligible application process. An already-submitted citizenship application cannot be upgraded to paid priority.

The citizenship processing guide explains this service separately from exceptional urgency requests. Citizenship has no super priority product. Lina cannot purchase an immigration next-day service and expect it to accelerate naturalisation, a ceremony or a passport.

Paying for speed does not change eligibility or guarantee the target. Retain the actual offer and terms, and check the applicable refund policy if further checks extend the case.

The ordinary naturalisation total includes the standard ceremony element. A local authority may charge for an optional private ceremony or other additional arrangements. Check what is being purchased and whether a standard option is available.

A first British passport has its own fee and application process. Read citizenship approval, ceremony and first passports before arranging travel around an expected decision. Passport fees and service availability should be checked for the applicant’s age, location and application method.

Do not assume that citizenship priority includes passport priority or that a nationality approval email authorises travel as a British citizen. The processes have different evidence and timing. A useful budget leaves space for the later passport without counting the included ceremony twice. It should also avoid paying for optional speed before the necessary nationality step is completed.

Understand the risk of paying before eligibility is clear

Most of the nationality application fee is generally not refunded simply because the application is refused. The ceremony portion or other elements may have a different refund position under current policy. Check the applicable guidance rather than assuming the full payment is refundable.

Resolve material residence, status or disclosure questions before paying. Eligible citizenship referees and a complete evidence pack are also part of readiness. A payment confirmation should record a decision to make an assessed application, rather than the start of investigating whether it was possible.

If a form error or new issue is discovered after submission, obtain appropriate advice promptly. Do not assume cancelling and applying again has no cost or consequence. The right response depends on the application and actual mistake. Keeping the final form, payment record and supporting evidence makes that assessment more focused.

Make professional fees and responsibility clear

An adviser’s fee is separate from government and third-party charges. Establish whether the service is a consultation, a review of a completed application or full representation, and what evidence and consistency work is included. A limited review should not be assumed to reconstruct the entire history.

Knightsbridge’s British citizenship service assists with suitable ordinary nationality applications. A Case Assessment can identify the application issue, available records and appropriate service. The scope and fee for the next stage should be agreed clearly.

Before proceeding, the household should know which application each person needs, the compulsory fee, the optional costs and the later passport stage. That creates a practical budget tied to eligibility and the real process, rather than one headline number expected to cover everything.

Lina’s revised budget tells her what is compulsory, what is optional and what still needs a price or decision. Its value comes from the three nationality conclusions behind it, not simply from adding the household’s names to one fee figure.
