If your fee waiver is approved today, is the next application ready to be submitted within the right deadline?

Sara’s approval email arrived on Monday; she opened it on Wednesday. Fortunately, the next immigration application was already being prepared.

Approval is an important financial decision, but it is not the visa or citizenship grant. The token must be used for the correct person and process, and the subsequent application still needs to be valid and meet its substantive requirements. Different waiver schemes have different time limits.

This guide explains how to move from approval to the next application without confusing financial permission to proceed with immigration status. It focuses on the practical record, deadlines and evidence checks. Where the current status or route is uncertain, obtain appropriate advice promptly rather than assume the token resolves it.

Identify the scheme and its next-application conditions

Start with the full decision, not a short message saying “approved”. An in-country immigration waiver, overseas entry clearance waiver and child citizenship waiver are separate processes. Read spouse and partner fee waiver eligibility, fee waivers outside the UK or children’s citizenship fee waivers as appropriate.

Keep the decision date, receipt date, applicant’s name, reference, token and stated deadline. These details establish what has been approved and what must happen next. If family members applied, check each named person rather than assuming the outcome covers the household.

The later application should match the relevant scheme and approval. A token is not transferable money that can be applied to another person’s fee. Do not select a different form merely because it appears easier to complete or accepts a code. Establish the actual required process before submission.

The schemes have separate next-application conditions:

SchemePosition to record
Ordinary online in-country immigrationRule 34G(4)(a) uses submission of the completed same-route permission application within ten working days of receipt of the waiver decision for its earlier-application-date treatment
Online overseas entry clearancePolicy requires the entry-clearance application within 28 calendar days of the actual waiver decision date
Online child citizenshipPolicy requires the citizenship application within 28 calendar days of the actual waiver decision date

For the in-country process, distinguish two purposes. Rule 34G concerns which application date is treated as applying. The operational family/private-life waiver policy also gives instructions for using the URN, describing ten working days from the actual decision date. Current public service information describes ten working days from getting the decision. These statements should not be silently turned into an extra period of permission or one universal clock.

Read the approval as soon as it arrives. Record receipt evidence, identify the token instruction and act promptly within the applicable requirements. If dates or instructions differ, obtain immediate clarification and status advice while there is still time to comply; do not wait for the later date on an assumption.

Rule 34G(4)(b) also addresses a paid same-route application made before receipt of the waiver decision. Different-route applications are addressed by 34G(5). These provisions are subject to the relevant application and variation rules; they are not a promise that every waiver history preserves permission.

Keep the decision and receipt evidence together

Sara’s decision is dated Monday 2 November 2026 and is received by email that day. She first opens it on Wednesday 4 November. The retained email establishes receipt; her later reading does not restart a period measured from receipt or decision.

Her team completes the already-prepared same-route application on Friday 6 November in this illustration, after checking validity, current status, the approved charges and the actual instructions. She keeps the submission confirmation with the decision and email. The story does not require an argument about a later receipt date because both relevant dates are documented and action is prompt.

If correspondence goes through a representative, establish the actual receipt and service facts. An applicant’s own first reading is not automatically the governing event. Record biometrics separately from the later-application deadline.

Match the person, charge and route to the approval

An approval may cover the application fee and IHS, or the IHS only, depending on the scheme and financial assessment. Read IHS fee waivers to understand that distinction. An IHS-only outcome still leaves the application fee to be paid.

Use fee waivers for partners and children applying together where several people are involved. A favourable decision for one applicant does not establish the same result for the others. Keep a separate next-step entry for every person.

If a name, passport detail or token appears wrong, obtain help promptly through the appropriate channel and retain evidence of the issue. Do not use another person’s token or create a different identity entry to bypass the problem. A technical workaround that misdescribes the applicant can create a more serious application issue than the original error.

Current paragraph 34G distinguishes a later same-route permission application from an application on another route after a fee waiver request. The earlier request date is not a general date that can be attached to any subsequent application.

Read fee waiver timing and section 3C for the detailed position. A waiver requested for a specified human rights route should not be assumed to preserve the date for a later work or settlement application. The current rules identify a different effective date for a different-route application.

This can be particularly important if earlier permission has expired. Obtain advice on the actual history before changing the plan. A financial approval does not create a new grant of leave, cure an earlier gap or remove the need to meet application validity requirements. The route and status assessment should be completed before pressing submit.

Review the application and any changes before submission

The next application should be substantially prepared while the waiver is pending. Review the correct form, evidence, declarations and route requirements. Approval of affordability does not establish the relationship, residence or other substantive facts needed for the visa or registration.

Use fee waiver evidence organisation to retain the financial record, but keep it distinct from the underlying immigration or nationality evidence. A large financial upload is not a substitute for the documents required by the next process.

Sara’s relationship and identity evidence was collected while the financial request was pending. The approval triggers a final refresh and validity check, rather than the start of the entire immigration assessment. Her plan has two coordinated workstreams: the financial request and the separately scoped underlying application. Both are needed before the next step can be completed properly.

Circumstances can change while a waiver is pending. Read working and benefit income, savings and assets and family support if a significant financial development affects the position. Obtain advice about the appropriate update rather than leave the application based on information known to be inaccurate.

The same principle applies to the substantive route. A changed relationship, new immigration decision or altered family arrangement may affect the application being prepared. Do not assume that a token authorises submission of the old plan regardless of what has happened.

Keep the dates and evidence of any change. An accurate update is different from rewriting earlier history to make the request look consistent. The next application should truthfully describe the relevant circumstances and use the proper process for information that has changed since the waiver request. Where the change creates a complex issue, the appropriate level of advice matters.

Complete biometrics under the actual instructions

The later application can generate a separate identity step. Keep the instruction, trigger and evidence of completion together:

ProcessInstruction to distinguish
Current public in-country serviceAttend biometrics within seventeen working days of being asked to book
Family/private-life operational waiver guidanceSeparately describes making an SSC appointment within seventeen working days; follow and clarify the actual issued instructions promptly
Child citizenship policyHas its own stated 45-calendar-day biometrics process, with relevant overseas arrangements
Overseas immigrationFollow the separate entry-clearance biometrics instructions and their stated period

Do not add these periods to the token deadline and assume the last day is available for every task. Sara enters the actual appointment instruction when received and retains the booking and attendance evidence. A waiver approval does not excuse an unmet validity step.

Retain each person’s status and submission record

Read essential living costs and children’s needs if the family circumstances materially change before the next application. Keep the financial explanation accurate, while recognising that the child’s immigration and nationality position is a separate question.

A citizenship waiver or registration application does not itself extend a child’s visa. A parent’s approved financial request does not automatically protect every dependant. Record current permission and the appropriate next step for each person.

If the family cannot complete the planned application in time, obtain advice promptly about the actual legal position. Do not assume that a new waiver request automatically restores an expired token, preserves the earlier application date or creates continuing permission. Those consequences depend on the scheme, route and history, rather than the family’s understandable intention to apply.

Retain the final form, submission confirmation, token use and any payment receipt. Keep the waiver decision with that record. If the application service displays a charge you believed was waived, check the approval and process before proceeding on a guess.

Use fee waiver processing times and evidence requests for managing follow-up and distinguishing a financial decision from a visa or nationality decision. Monitor the correct email and contact details throughout the next process.

Knightsbridge’s fee waiver service can identify suitable financial-request assistance and the scope of any related regulated application work. A Case Assessment should include the full approval, receipt date, current permission and proposed next application. The aim is a valid next step completed under the right scheme, with accurate evidence and a clear understanding of the status actually held.
