When you are preparing a spouse visa application, the waiting time affects far more than a travel date. It can determine when you start living together, leave a job or commit to a new home.

As checked in October 2026, standard spouse applications made outside the UK usually receive a decision within 12 weeks. Partner applications inside the UK that meet the financial and English language requirements usually take eight weeks. These are decision estimates, with preparation and appointment arrangements adding to your overall timetable.

At Knightsbridge, our view is that a useful timetable begins with whether the application is ready. Understanding the evidence, the processing start point and the commitments that can wait helps you decide when to apply and whether faster processing is worth considering.

How long does a UK spouse visa take?

Start with where you are applying, the basis of the application and the service actually selected.

Application and servicePublished decision timingImportant qualification
Standard spouse application outside the UKUsually within 12 weeksCount from the relevant processing start point
Standard partner application inside the UKUsually within eight weeksApplies to the category meeting the financial and English requirements
Priority family application outside the UKUsually within 30 working daysOnly where the service is available
Eligible super priority family application inside the UKUsually by the end of the next working day after a weekday appointmentWeekend and bank-holiday appointments have different timing

Each timeframe is a published expectation. A particular application can take longer. www.gov.uk

The eight-week figure does not cover every family application. Home Office guidance currently lists around 12 months for certain in-country partner/private-life applications where the minimum income and English requirements are not required, with no service standard for that category. Identify the actual application basis before choosing the figure to plan around.

Our Spouse Visa service explains the wider route and the eligibility questions that come before submission.

When does the spouse visa processing clock start?

Completing the online form and starting the published processing period are not necessarily the same event.

UKVI’s processing guidance says the period starts when you attend the required biometric appointment. Where UKVI directs an applicant to use the ID Check app instead, it starts after the relevant identity verification and submission steps. Follow the process attached to your application.

This distinction matters where an appointment is not available immediately, or attending one requires travel. The time between online submission and that appointment still affects your plans, even though it sits outside the published decision period.

Keep the application submission confirmation and identity-check completion record separately. They answer different questions: when you applied, and when the processing period began. Do not use an appointment date as a substitute for checking whether an in-country application was submitted in time.

Build a timeline with room for each stage

Consider a hypothetical overseas application submitted on Day 1, with biometrics completed on Day 15. Assuming the normal appointment process, the relevant start point is Day 15. The preceding fortnight has already formed part of the couple’s real waiting time.

The dates illustrate the sequence only. Appointment availability varies.

An employer letter that takes a week to obtain or an unresolved document issue belongs in the preparation plan. Build time around the records your circumstances require and who needs to supply them.

For example, a couple may want to apply before a planned move, while a discrepancy between payslips and bank records still needs explaining. The useful next step is to resolve that discrepancy and review the evidence together. Paying for priority consideration leaves the underlying question unchanged.

There is no single preparation period that suits every couple. Identify what is outstanding, agree who will obtain it and review the intended submission date against that work. For an application inside the UK, check the current permission expiry date at the outset.

Should you use priority processing?

For an overseas spouse visa application, priority consideration usually takes 30 working days, where available. Do not substitute the five-working-day figure advertised for many other visa types.

For eligible family applications inside the UK, the faster option listed is super priority through a UKVCAS appointment. The eligibility table does not offer ordinary five-working-day priority for this category. Places are limited, so confirm availability in the application process.

Super priority usually means a decision by the end of the next working day after a weekday appointment, or two working days after a weekend or bank-holiday appointment. Further checks or an information request can extend the wait.

Consider the extra cost against what an earlier decision would allow you to do. Faster consideration may be useful where your evidence is ready and timing matters. It cannot fix an unresolved eligibility question or make a proposed moving date certain.

Prepare for questions without assuming something has gone wrong

UKVI identifies several reasons an application may take longer, including document verification, requests for further evidence, an interview, additional checks, increased demand or technical problems.

A request for information means there is a question to address. It does not establish the outcome. Read the request carefully, identify precisely what is being asked and check the response deadline and submission method.

If the request concerns an employment figure, for example, sending the whole financial bundle again may leave the same question unanswered. A focused explanation supported by the relevant records is more useful than additional pages without a clear purpose.

Keep a copy of the request, your response and proof of delivery. Check the email address used for the application, including spam folders, and agree who will monitor correspondence if a representative is involved.

Avoid deriving a new guaranteed decision date from the day you answer a request. Follow any specific update UKVI gives you.

Keep your current immigration position separate from the estimate

If you are extending a spouse visa or switching from another eligible route inside the UK, check your existing permission alongside the processing estimate.

A valid application made before that permission expires can extend the existing leave under section 3C while the application remains pending. The existing conditions normally continue, including any limits on work. Submitting a partner application does not automatically give you the rights attached to the permission you are seeking.

Do not assume that a late application, or one rejected as invalid, provides that protection. Do not wait for a preferred priority slot at the expense of making the required valid application in time.

Travel also needs separate checking. Under paragraph 34K of the Immigration Rules, leaving the Common Travel Area while an application for permission to stay is undecided causes it to be treated as withdrawn. Section 3C leave ends if you leave the UK. These are different rules, so retaining your passport does not settle whether a trip is safe for your application.

What if your UK spouse visa application is delayed?

Before treating an application as overdue, confirm the category, service selected and processing start date. Then check whether UKVI has requested anything or explained that the case will take longer.

The processing guidance says to contact UKVI if the application has exceeded the current processing time and you have not been contacted about it. If you have received an update, consider what it says and whether any action remains outstanding.

Prepare a short chronology with the application reference, submission date, biometric date, service purchased, evidence requests and responses. Add any relevant changes in circumstances and the practical effect of the delay.

That record supports a focused enquiry and helps an adviser assess what further action may be appropriate.

Our information about delayed visa applications explains how Knightsbridge can assess the situation. A delay needs examination on its facts; nobody should promise that an enquiry will produce an immediate decision.

Make commitments around what is confirmed

For an overseas application, UKVI advises against booking travel before receiving a decision. It also states that it will not reimburse travel costs or other expenses because an application takes longer than expected.

Apply the same practical discipline to other commitments. Before giving notice on accommodation, setting a firm employment start date or arranging a family move, ask what would happen if the decision came later than expected.

When approval arrives, read the actual decision and permission dates. Follow the instructions for accessing your eVisa and check that you can use your immigration status as required. Approval is an important milestone, but the decision instructions still need attention.

A useful plan gives each commitment a trigger: evidence ready, application submitted, identity checks completed, decision received and permission confirmed. That gives the couple a way to make progress without treating an estimate as certainty.
