What does your settlement budget need to cover beyond the number on the application screen?

Ravi and Mina first multiplied the ILR fee by three. Their daughter was on a different timetable, and they had not decided whether to buy faster processing.

The ILR application fee is a substantial household cost, particularly when several people are applying. A realistic budget also considers tests, optional processing or appointment services, professional assistance and any dependant extension still needed. Processing time affects practical plans as well as money.

This guide explains ordinary ILR costs and timing, using the fees checked in October 2026. Always confirm the current fee and the services actually offered for your application before payment. Paying more for speed changes the processing service; it does not change the eligibility requirements or guarantee approval.

Start with the fee for each applicant

The current ordinary ILR application fee is £3,226 per person. A child applying for settlement is normally charged the same application fee. Including family members in a permitted application process does not create a family discount.

For a fictional household with two adults and one child all needing ordinary ILR, the application fees alone total £9,678. That illustration assumes each person qualifies for the relevant settlement application and no particular fee exemption applies. Establish the applications actually needed before using a family total.

Our ILR application date guide helps identify who can apply when. The route assessments in Skilled Worker ILR and five-year partner settlement should come before payment. An application fee is not a deposit that reserves eligibility while the remaining qualifying period is completed.

Check whether every family member needs ILR now

A partner who arrived later may need further permission instead of settlement. Our Skilled Worker dependant ILR guide explains the separate qualifying position and continuing dependant route. Budget for the application the partner can properly make, including any applicable health surcharge.

For children, start with whether ILR or citizenship registration is relevant. A UK-born child may already be British or may have a registration entitlement after parental settlement. The correct process should be identified from the facts, rather than selected because the adults are using ILR.

Record each person’s permission expiry, next application and expected costs. This makes a staged family plan visible. It also prevents the household from spending all available funds on one settlement application while another person’s extension deadline remains unresolved. A complete budget follows the family’s legal position, even where the applications happen at different times.

After the individual eligibility checks, assume only Ravi and Mina need ordinary ILR now. Their two application fees total £6,452. Their daughter’s separate next process is assessed before a fee is included for her. The original £9,678 three-ILR total was accurate arithmetic for a different set of assumptions, not the household’s finished budget.

Separate settlement fees from surcharge and evidence costs

ILR itself does not attract the Immigration Health Surcharge. A person who needs another period of temporary permission may face a different position, depending on the route and any exemption.

Do not add years of IHS to an ordinary settlement budget simply because it was payable on earlier extensions. Equally, do not remove it from a dependant extension budget just because the main applicant is settling. Identify the precise application for each person.

Our IHS fee waiver guide explains the separate question for eligible temporary immigration applications. It should not be read as a general way to waive the ordinary ILR fee. The distinction matters when comparing an extension with settlement: the fees arise under different application processes and are not interchangeable amounts that can be moved between family members.

Some applicants need an English test, qualification assessment or Life in the UK Test. Others already have accepted evidence or an exemption. Translation and document-retrieval costs can also arise, depending on the records.

Use the ILR documents guide to identify the evidence before paying for services. A test provider’s package may include preparation materials or administration that you do not need. A university or overseas authority may have its own timescale for issuing records.

List necessary evidence work separately from optional convenience services. That makes it easier to understand where the money is going and what can be prepared directly. Do not remove a required record from the plan to make the budget look smaller. Resolve the evidence method and timing so the application can be assessed on a supported basis.

Understand standard processing as a service estimate

The official Skilled Worker settlement overview currently says a decision is usually made within six months of providing biometrics. Check the service information for your own route and identity process. A target or usual period is not a promise that a particular application will finish by a holiday or employment deadline.

Requests for information, checks and individual circumstances can extend the process. The submission confirmation, biometrics appointment and date the case becomes ready for consideration are not always the same event. Keep the instructions and completion evidence for each stage.

Avoid using a friend’s recent decision as your expected timetable. It can be a useful account of their experience, but it does not establish how quickly yours will be decided. A workable plan includes arrangements for the period in which the application remains pending, including current work conditions and any dependant deadlines.

Check the faster service offered for your route

Faster processing is a separate purchase, available only where the application and identity process qualify. Published October 2026 figures should be checked against the option actually offered before payment:

ServiceExtra government chargeVerified planning position
Skilled Worker ILR, standardNone beyond the application feeRoute overview says usually within six months of biometrics
Skilled Worker ILR, priority if offered£500Route overview currently describes five working days; confirm the target and starting identity step in the actual offer
Super priority, eligible settlement application£1,000Usually next working day after the relevant identity step, subject to the service’s non-working-day arrangements and checks

Do not import the Skilled Worker overview’s five-day wording into every settlement route. Before purchasing, save the route, service name, target, starting event and terms shown for your application. If the offer does not make the timetable clear, obtain clarification before paying for it. Capacity and eligibility can limit what appears.

For Ravi and Mina, priority would add £1,000 for two eligible applications, making their application-and-priority subtotal £7,452. It would not buy their daughter an outcome or guarantee either adult’s travel date. Standard processing remains a costed option; tests, appointments and professional work remain separate.

Plan travel without relying on a hoped-for decision

Read travel while an ILR application is pending before booking a journey. Leaving the Common Travel Area while an in-country application for permission is undecided can cause it to be treated as withdrawn. Separate consequences can arise if current permission has expired and section 3C is being relied on.

A non-refundable ticket does not create a right to a faster decision. Nor does a paid priority service make the intended travel date safe if the decision has not arrived. Consider the application timetable before committing to a journey.

If urgent travel arises, obtain advice on the application and status position before leaving. The relevant questions include whether a decision has actually been made, what permission remains and how return would be authorised. An approval email should be checked against the grant and current status record before you assume every travel requirement is resolved.

Can you get a fee waiver for ILR?

Low income does not create a general affordability waiver for ordinary Skilled Worker or five-year partner ILR. The fee waiver scheme for specified temporary human rights applications should not be assumed to cover settlement. Some settlement categories have separate fee exemptions or particular arrangements, which must be identified under their own provisions.

Do not submit a fee waiver request for another route on the assumption that it will preserve the date for a later ILR application. The current application-date rules distinguish the route specified in the waiver request from a different route subsequently applied for. This can affect timing and immigration permission.

If you cannot pay the settlement fee, obtain advice before expiry about the lawful applications actually available. The question is the appropriate route and status plan, rather than finding a waiver code that can be attached to any application. A child citizenship waiver is another separate scheme and does not waive a child’s ordinary ILR fee.

Record the agreed service and later costs

An adviser’s fee is separate from the government charge. Before instructing, establish what the service includes, who completes the form, who checks the evidence and who submits the application. A consultation, a limited document review and full representation are different services.

Do not assume that a review of a completed pack includes reconstructing every immigration period or reconciling all financial records. Where that work is needed, it should fall within an expressly agreed scope. Any additional government or third-party costs should also be distinguished from the professional fee.

Knightsbridge’s ILR service assists with suitable ordinary applications. A Case Assessment can establish the route, available records and appropriate service. The scope and fee for the next stage should be clear before you commit to it.

After settlement, British citizenship after ILR has its own eligibility and timing requirements. The costs in British citizenship fees are separate from ILR. A settlement payment does not include naturalisation, a ceremony or a first British passport.

Keep an application record showing the fees paid, optional services selected, instructions completed and outstanding steps. That record is useful if a payment needs tracing or the Home Office requests further information. It also gives the household a reliable starting point for the next stage.

A sound settlement budget should tell you who is applying, which process each person needs, what is compulsory and what is optional. Combined with a realistic timetable, that supports a practical decision about when the family is ready to proceed.
